Его мастерство, острый слух и верная рука сослужили службу девяти альбомам Pink Floyd, включая The Wall, а также сольникам Гилмора, Уотерса, Райта. Дуг Сакс был пионером современного метода прямой записи на диск.
Для справки, мастеринг — это процесс подготовки и переноса записанной и сведенной фонограммы на носитель для последующего размножения. Из исходных материалов создаётся экземпляр, который при тиражировании является эталонным. Его называют мастер-копией. Мастеринг включает в себя не только техническую сторону (собирание треков в нужном порядке, выравнивание по громкости, добавление пауз между ними), но и художественную, в основе которой «полировка» звука.
Профессионалы сравнивают работу мастеринг-инженера с работой микрохирурга, основной принцип которого: «не навреди». Помимо эксклюзивного лампового оборудования главными «инструментами» остаются уши мастера и его персональный опыт. А сам Дуг Сакс говорил: «Я не изготовляю блюдо, но приправляю его. И пытаюсь сохранить то, что уже сделал звукоинженер».
Мастеринг – последнее звено в цепи контроля качества записанной музыки перед тем, как готовый тираж отправится на прилавки магазинов. Мастеринг-инженер может выжать, как выражаются на профслэнге, все потенциальные возможности записи, подправить небольшие дефекты, промониторить амплитудно-частотные характеристики, проверить звук на предмет искажений, сравнить тональный баланс с известными стандартами. И Дуг Сакс разработал новаторский комплекс процедур для тестирования и оценки аудиокомпонентов на слух.
Дуг занимал должность генерального директора лаборатории The Mastering Lab.
