This is a good question that deserves a thorough answer:
The MTS-01 is assembled in our Ohio USA factory, much like some of our subwoofers.
Of course this speaker was first of all designed in the US by our team to use the best components we could collect. We receive a bare cabinet that has no side panels or drivers etc installed from China. The woofers are also built in Asia (not China however) and imported by us to Ohio too. The tweeter is Danish. The crossover is a custom design (even the components are selected and branded) but we don’t reveal where all our parts come from ;^) We could build our own version of the custom 6.5” Peeless woofer the MTS-01 speakers use, but for the moment world-wide subwoofer demand has our woofer assembly line (in Ohio again) already pretty much running at capacity.
Of course all these materials are managed by our factory crew using a lean manufacturing process that builds to order, not unlike Dell computers. We practice “JIT” methods (Just In Time) to keep supply stocks as low as we can rationally do. Our factory is only 20,000ft2 so space is always a premium. An order is posted from our site and typically is built, fully tested and shipped out our factory dock the next business day. Lately our assembly team has been working Saturday and Sunday too just to keep up with demand.
So the MTS-01 has parts literally come in from all over the world, and we spend some hours assembling and testing each one. In fact each speaker is validated against a baseline system and has its own documented frequency response and quality control sheet signed by our factory craftsman responsible.
But despite all that we do not stamp this product as “Made in the USA” since by our very strict Federal Trade Commission rules, content must (almost literally) be weighed and documented, etc. Instead we quite accurately market that our products are “Built in the USA of foreign and domestic components”. Which is the case for nearly everything we market.
Subs are the same then, though depending on the product the component lineups change:
On our famous Powered Cylinder subs just about everything is fabricated locally in Ohio (quite a bit high tech fabrication ability here even though it is not a very rich economic region today). The top grill is Chinese, but even the plastic ports are made in the next state, of Indiana. The amp, as with all our BASH amps, are built exclusively for us in Toronto Canada. Again, those woofers for ALL our subwoofers are built in our own factory (of foreign and domestic components like the subwoofers themselves). Only USA voice coils have proven acceptable for our woofers for instance.
Powered Box subs vary in how they are built and sourced from the PC’s. Some empty cabinets are imported from China (Charcoal Black Vinyl, our real wood veneers, and piano gloss black), some are domestically sourced. The best Chinese quality is very good on large precision built items, and the prices reasonable. However you must buy in massive quantities and even then the quality we require at SVS is not inexpensive. Years ago we had wood veneer cabinets in Ohio too, but they were 3X the price of those we use now, and quality was not that good (large cabinet assembly is very time intensive). So we import to the US many of our big subwoofer and speaker cabinets in 40’ seagoing containers. Our industry-leading fine textured black cabinets are built exclusively for SVS in Cincinnati Ohio, a few hours away from our location near Youngstown, Ohio. So you can buy a PB13-Ultra for instance with an American built woofer, Canadian built amp, and American built enclosure/cabinet too if that interests you.
So, the answer to this question is not as simple as it seems. One part is simple: The SBS-01 family of speakers (including the amazing SCS-01 center) is made entirely in China for SVS. It’s a design that belongs to us (many brands simply put their logo on something “off the shelf” in China), and we put a TON of quality components in it, and sell them direct to you. Same as all other SVS products, except for where it is built. We knew we would sell thousands of those speakers and that to make any money on them at all, they could not be built with expensive American labor. Our quality is worth investing in the best parts and labor in the world, but even at SVS we understand some products can’t be built by your hands if you are ever going to put them in customers hands. To be honest the very modern and expensive subcontractor we use for the SBS-01 speakers does a better job building them than any factory I have seen but perhaps our own in Ohio.
I would say we conduct US-based assembly than any other American audio brand today. I’m certainly unaware of any US company building as many speakers and subs here as SVS does. I hope nobody uses this information as a sole-criterion for purchasing any of our speakers or subs however. The USA once dominated the world-market in home audio equipment, then only speakers and subwoofers, now, nearly all affordable products are made (with low costs and difficult to manage quality) entirely in Asia or South America. There is nothing wrong with that business model, but quite simply the reason our stuff is so good compared to other brands is because it’s NOT a commodity we are importing and distributing. We make these products, we know everything that goes in, and everything that should come out.
When you are a smaller brand, you have to be better. This way of working is what makes us better.
