Akon - "Lonely"

The Atlanta warbler takes a page out of Kanye's book, messing with a Bobby Vinton sample to power a lilting lullaby the Fugees would be proud of.

X - "We're Desperate" (Live)

More than a few punk bands reform only to spotlight how much oomph they've lost in middle-age. But Los Angeles' finest had plenty of power when they celebrated their 25th anniversary last year. Rock is meant to knock you on your ass, and this live track -- an explosive ode to living a tattered 20something existence -- is nothing but wallop.

Gorillaz -- "Feel Good Inc."

With Danger Mouse taking over the producer stool from Dan the Automator, the cartoon band's comeback single puts an ethereal Miami bass bounce in the service of pure dance-floor joy.

The Hold Steady - "Cattle and the Creeping Things"

Known for messing with Catholic imagery, the Brooklyn band jumps into the Bible and rocks out. Tales fly by: Four guys on horses, dudes getting chased from the temple, a little thing called pestilence. And the garden of Eden? "The dude blamed the chick/the chick blamed the snake." While the drummer tried to bash his way to heaven.

Coldplay -- "Speed of Sound"

You could say the first single from X&Y finds the band playing it safe -- it's all "Scientist" keyboard hooks and falsetto modulation. But Chris Martin's craft still contains magic. Somehow the track feels like the very act of falling in love.

Mike Jones - "Back Then"

Remember that high school nerd picture of Lil' Jon that bubbled up after he became the king of crunk? Jones, a Houston dude whose major label debut almost took him to the top of charts, has made a thumpin' hit about rubbin' his success in the faces of those who teased him in high school. It's little more than a chant, but it's a great ride.

M.I.A. -- "Bucky Done Gun"

Hollaback, girl! The Sri Lankan-by-way-of-London ragamuffin shakes up the summer with bizarre marching band fanfares and a dead-on tech assault.

Kaki King - "All the Landslides Birds Have Seen Since the Beginning of the World"

Connecting the dots between the wordless solo excursions of Bruce Cockburn, John Fahey and Bela Fleck, the 20something guitarist has made a mark of late. Sometimes she's dreamy, sometimes she's punk. Always she's proud of her cinematic sound.

Duke Spirit -- "Love is A Unfamiliar Name"

Perhaps the best P.J. Harvey song not written by Her Polly-ness, this London quintet whips up a dark storm, with singer Leila Moss sounding somewhere between ecstasy and damnation.

Jem -- "They"

For this slept-on single, the Welsh singer turns the Dido formula inside out, with a creepy kiddie chorus spooking up a Gap girl's version of "All Apologies."
