Is anyone having the ghosting problem with non HTPC setups? As I mentioned earlier in this thread, the ghosting issue is not specific to HTPC setups. It occurs when the AX100 is fed a 720p signal from any device. I observed it on an HTPC, Comcast HD DVR, Bluray, and HD-DVD player when I configured these devices to output 720p. When any of these devices were configured to output 1080i, there was no ghosting observed. |

I received my new AX100U yesterday. One of the first things I looked for was the ghosting problem that has been discussed here, and I was immediately able to confirm it was present. I was a little surprised, because this has been described as an HTPC issue, and I run all of my sources, including my HTPC through a Lumagen HDP video processor. If it was an issue related to PC video cards, I was hopeful my HDP would filter it out, but no such luck. I was further surprised to see that the problem also occurred on all of my other inputs, including my HTPC, Motorola 6412 HD-DVR, Samsung Bluray Player, and Toshiba HD-DVD player. Ive now put about 9 hours on my bulb since I received the AX100 and I havent watched a single movie. I would guess about 6 of those hours were related to analyzing the ghosting issue. I tried as many different settings and configurations as I could think of, connected devices directly through the projector, run them through the HDP, etc., etc. Ive come up with some very interesting findings that I thought folks here would be interested in. It appears that the issue is related to using a 720p source as your input to the projector. Here are a few highlights: When inputting a 720p signal, I was able to reproduce the problem on all of my source devices, including HTPC, HD DVR, Bluray, and HD DVD players. This was true both with the signal running through the HDP (outputting 720p) or with each device directly connected to the AX100 and outputting 720p. When inputting a 1080i signal, I was never able to reproduce the problem (didnt try 1080p). Odd, considering the AX100 is a native 720p device...but thats what my testing found. I observed the problem on both HDMI and Component inputs. Although the problem was a bit less pronounced using component, it was definitely present. The problem is very easy to detect on an HTPC due to the crisp, single pixel text (as seen in Steves photo above). Its much, much more difficult to detect the problem on other video sources such as the DVR, Bluray and HD DVD players. Its very easy to miss if you arent sure exactly what you are looking for. The key is to switch to a source and then bring up a menu or guide with text from that source (not the AX100 menu). Stand close to the screen and find some text and find a straight letter such as an "I" or an "L". Look for a subtle shadow to the left of the letter. It might just look like normal shading, drops shadow, or anti-aliasing of the text (all normal stuff to see on text on these devices). Cycle the Aspect Ratio of the projector away from and the back to 16:9 and look to see if the shadow is gone. Switch to another source and then back to see if the shadow is back, etc. Comparing before-after is really the only way to be sure on anything other than an HTPC. I only have a single AX100, so I certainly cant say for sure. However, enough folks have reported this ghosting issue that it wouldnt surprise me if all AX100s have the issue. Given the fact that it only happens on a 720p source, and its next to impossible to even detect it on anything other than a PC, many folks may never experience the issue, and those that do, may not even notice (even if they were casually looking for it). For now, Ive worked around the problem by configuring the Lumagen to output 1080i for all my 1080i sources rather than scaling to 720p for me. This works fine on all but the HTPC, as the results of upscaling a desktop from 720p to 1080i are not ideal (worse than the ghosting problem, Id say). For the HTPC, Ill have to leave it at 720p and use the Aspect Ratio workaround. Cycling aspect ratios (away from 16:9 and back to 16:9) always causes the ghosting to go away. Thats how I know its not the result of ringing or excessive sharpness. Unless someone can explain how cycling aspect ratios can eliminate ringing, I think we can safely eliminate the excessive sharpness theory. I was at this for 6 hours and changed cables, devices in the video chain, component vs. HDMI, etc., etc. The one constant was that the problem always occurred with a 720p source (and always went away after cycling aspect ratio).

1. It shuts off after a few minutes, goes into standby and cannot be turned back on. The power has to be turned off on the back of the unit for a few minutes to even get the lamp to come on again. But then it just shuts off. I called Panasonic Projector Tech support and they immediately recognized the problem as a sticking iris. So it sounds like Panasonic has acknowledged the stuck iris problem and will fix it, thats great to hear. 2. But what about the non-uniform color problem and the economy mode flicker problems? Have they acknowledged those problems and are there fixes for those problems? Просмотр прошивки Панас-100: To find out your firmware version-on the remote press power once than go to arrow keys.Press left,up,down,up,down and then enter. Then go to selfcheck in the menu. The firmware is located toward the top at left. If you press the power button while its on, then press left, up, down, up, then down again, you will get to some secret menu. Then if you go to self check, you can see how many times the bulb has been reset, and the actual run time of the projector..Forgot to mention after the sequence, press ok |
