The story last year was that they'd found the multitracks of almost complete alternate versions of the first two Sabbath albums that were recorded in a studio just off Tottenham Court Rd. in central London. I'm not sure why they abandoned these and re-recorded the albums somewhere else but they would definitely be interesting to hear. There was also an acetate unearthed by a collector from 1969 that had an early version of 'The Wizard' on one side and an unreleased track called 'When I Came Down' - I believe they still had a sax player in the band when these were cut. There really is a wealth of rarities to be mined for a Sabbath re-issue program, I hope you don't mind me indulging here, based on what's known to exist.. (In addition to the original album mixes, of course) Black Sabbath: Alternate version of the album noted above, Evil Woman (45rpm single only release), 'The Wizard' & 'When I Came Down' from the acetate, pre-1st album demos of 'Song For Jim' and 'The Rebel' (as heard on the black sabbath story vol.1 VHS & DVD). Tony Iommi also mentioned that there was a longer, better version of 'The Warning' cut during the 1st album sessions that wasn't used, and there are the 4 tracks cut for John Peel's BBC Top Gear program that appeared on Ozzy best-of 'The Ozzman Cometh' about 10 years ago. Bonus DVD: Beat Club and other various TV appearances of the time. Paranoid: Alt. version of the album noted above, quad mix of the album (SACD or DVD-A please!). Bonus DVD: Beat Club, Top Of The Pops, etc. appearaces plus th complete version of Paris 1970 seen in bits on The sabbath story vol 1 VHS/DVD and heard on the past lives CD Master Of Reality: alt version of the album and maybe some live tracks, the band was absolutely on fire at this point. Studio outtakes and chatter would be good as well. Bonus DVD: slim pickings here too, but Ozzy's home movies from the tour as seen on the 'Don't Blame Me' VHS would be a good start. Vol. 4: Bill Ward reportedly has a tape of a jam session with Sabbath and John Bonham & Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin..that would be interesting to hear. Also, several shows in early 1973 were recorded for a possible live album - some of this came out as the 'Live at Last' album in 1980, but some of the best parts of their concert repertoire were omitted from the album due to running time constraints - it would be nice to hear some of this. Bonus DVD: Supposedly the same shows that were recorded for the never released live album were also filmed, including Manchester - just judging from the great pictures in the gatefold of Vol. 4, a DVD of this would be a delight to see. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - suposedly this was mixed for quad, although it never showed up on any release lists. It wouldn't surprise me though, given the wide use of the stereo spectrum in the regular version. It would also be interesting to hear any outtakes/alternate versions of the songs on the album - given they spent almost a year on the album, there's probably lots of leftovers. Bonus DVD: A complete version of their performance at California Jam - Tony Iommi confirmed that he does have a tape of this in an interview on his website. It would also be nice to see a properly synched version of the promo film for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and perhaps more of the raw footage that the promo came from. Sabotage - a quad version of the album was prepared and announced for release but never came out. Perhaps fill out the rest of the disc with studio outtakes and tracks from their King Biscuit performance that aren't available on the past lives CD. Bonus DVD: The band's appearance on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, which was 5 or 6 songs - it would be nice if they could find the entire concert, but we'll take what we can get. |

Technical Ecstacy - studio alternates and outtakes, and some live material would be great, King Biscuit recorded at least one show on this tour - the Technical Ecstacy material came off much better live. Bonus DVD: Not much is known to exist, aside from a couple of lipsynched promo videos for Rock & Roll Doctor and It's Alright.
Never Say Die - studio alternates and outtakes, and maybe some live tracks - Ozzy was in rough shape on this tour, both due to flu and drugs but there were some really bright spots, including the Never Say Die material sounding better than the studio versions, and they performed 'Hand of Doom' and 'Fairies Wear Boots' for the first time in almost 10 years. Bonus DVD: Their shows in London were recorded and released in a truncated form on VHS & DVD, would be nice to see either the outtakes or a complete version. Also, apparently the Wolfgang's Vault people have videos of the California shows the band did that Bill Graham promoted. Heaven & Hell - supposedly there was a time after Ozzy left where Geezer left too and was replaced by Craig Gruber from Rainbow - it would be interesting to hear anything from that period if it exists. Some people think that Gruber actually appears on the finished album because Geezer never played with a pick before but all of a sudden on this album there are a bunch of tracks that featured bass played with a pick. Some live versions of the Heaven & Hell material from the tour before Bill Ward left would be good, the band sounded really reenergized. Bonus DVD: An expanded version of the Sabbath portion of the 'Black & Blue' laserdisc, plus the promo videos for Neon Knights & Die Young. Mob Rules: A complete alternate version of this album exists (sound familiar?) the band recorded an early version of this album at John Lennon's Tittenhurst Park estate, but producer Martin Birch wasn't happy with it, so he took them to another studio and recut the whole thing. Tony Iommi supposedly prefers the alternate version. Bonus DVD: All of the shows on the Mob Rules tour that were recorded for the Live Evil album were also filmed but never released - a natural for a bonus DVD, or a standalone Live Evil DVD I suppose. Born Again - everyone famously hates the muddy mix on this album, and supposedly there were several much better mixes before the final one. One of these leaked as a bootleg and in addition to the much cleaner mix, there is also an unreleased track and most of the tracks are longer. Bonus DVD: promo videos for Trashed & Zero The Hero and who knows what else! |
